So begins JG Ballard's 1974 novel Concrete Island, which I recently finished reading. Next steps: High-Rise's immediate predecessor, 1974's Concrete Island, is almost as good a gateway. Being a transitional novel, however, it's a bit atypical of much of Ballard's work. The 'taste'less, odourless, colorless language of the novel fits perfectly to the landscape of the story (all quotations are from 2008 Harper Perennial edition): “Steam hissed and spurted from the crashed radiator of the car, spitting out drops of rusty water.
